Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion and the Manaka Systematic Approach to Acupuncture Practice – Part 1

(10am-1:30pm + 3pm-7pm)

10.00 – 10.10 – Workshop introduction and overview

10:10 – 10:30 – Lecture on the nature and development of Acupuncture and moxibustion in Japan

10:30 – 11:00 – Channel theory and the conceptual model – Theoretical overview of the Manaka treatment approach – The 4 steps in the treatment process

11:00 – 11:30 – Treatment demonstration

11:30 am – 11:45 am – Tea/coffee break

11:45 am – 12:30 pm – Methods and results of abdominal palpation + practical palpation

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm – Step one: diagnosis of extraordinary canals - abdominal palpation and identification of patterns (8 patterns) - demonstrations + practice of step 1

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Lunch

3:00 pm – 3:45 pm – Introduction to chishin / retained needle method – Practice inserting the needle and re-palpating the abdomen to monitor changes

15:45 – 16:25 – Step one: treatment of extraordinary channels – what is an IP cable? How to use IP cable, location points – treatment of extraordinary channels with IP cable (8 standards)

4:25 pm – 4:40 pm – Tea/coffee break

4:40 pm – 6:15 pm – Demonstrations + practice of step 1

6:15 pm – 7:00 pm – Introduction to the use of kyutoshin / moxa on the needle handle; Step 2: kyutoshin on the shu points of the back – Demonstration

(10am-1:30pm + 3pm-7pm)

10:00 – 11:15 – Practice of steps 1 and 2

11:15 am – 12:30 pm – Introduction to okyu / Japanese direct moxibustion – methods, locations and nature of treatment points + demonstrations / practice

12:30 – 12:45 – Tea break

12:45 – 1:30 pm – Step 3: Sotai technique - structural adjustment – Demonstration + practice

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Lunch

15.00 – 16.15 – Practice of steps 1 to 3

4:15pm-5:15pm – Step 4: Overview of step 4 treatment strategies: uses of hinaishin (intradermal needles) in the body, hinaishin in the ears + pain control treatment

5:15 pm – 5:30 pm – Tea/coffee break

5:30 pm – 6:10 pm – Practice inserting intradermal needles

6:10 pm – 7:00 pm – Step 4: Okyu treatments – Demonstrations and practice
