Stephen Birch, PhD

Stephen Birch, PhD, began his studies in acupuncture in 1980, in Boston, with renowned masters such as Tin Yau So and Ted Kaptchuk.

Over the years, he refined his practice, collaborating with Kiiko Matsumoto and co-authoring three books with Dr. Matsumoto.

In 1986, he began his studies in Japan, collaborating with Dr. Yoshio Manaka and co-authoring his book.

From 1988 onwards, he focused on Toyohari – Meridian Therapy, studying with distinguished Japanese teachers.

 

Experience and Contributions


With over 34 years dedicated to Japanese acupuncture, Stephen Birch has become the most experienced practitioner of Toyohari outside of Japan.

He organizes courses extensively across Europe and in several countries, sharing his knowledge in Toyohari, Meridian Therapy, Manaka System and Shonishin.

Dr. Stephen Birch is the author of eight books, including fundamental works such as "Hara Diagnosis", "Japanese Acupuncture" and "Chasing the Dragon's Tail".

His works cover a wide range of topics in acupuncture and East Asian medicine.


 

Commitment to Research


Active in research since 1980, Stephen Birch completed his Ph.D. in 1997.

His contribution to the academic and clinical literature on acupuncture is notable, with dozens of published articles.



 

Introduction of Japanese Acupuncture in the West


Stephen Birch played a crucial role in introducing Japanese acupuncture to the West.

Their effort and commitment contributed significantly to the dissemination and recognition of this therapeutic practice.


Since 2008, Dr. Stephen Birch has been teaching courses in Portugal, contributing with lectures on acupuncture research and sharing his experience with therapists and health professionals.
